SDLRLA is proud to be one of 39 organizations and leaders who asked San Diego Police Chief Lansdowne to go further than collecting racial data for traffic stops.
“As concerned members of the community, we strongly encourage you to not stop at collecting data only for vehicle stops,” the letter said. “Collecting data on all stops, not just vehicle stops, is the only way to get a reliable picture of police-community interaction by race. As the department determined in 2000, when it began collecting data on vehicle stops, these statistics provide an important tool in addressing community concerns about racial profiling.” For full text of the letter, click here.
As a result of sending the letter, Chief Lansdowne has been asked to appear before the Public Safety Committee this week (1/29/14) to address the issues. Please help by coming out so everyone sees that all of San Diego’s communities want to address concerns about racial profiling!
What: The City Council’s Public Safety & Livable Neighborhoods Committee Meeting
When: Wed, January 29th at 2:00 pm (Meet up at 1:30pm out front of the building)
Where: San Diego City Council Cmte Room, 12th Floor, City Admin Building (202 “C” St downtown)
We encourage you to make a public comment, so that the City Council Members know how important this issue is to you and your neighborhood. Please keep in mind that the committee has other business to attend to, so there may not be time for everyone to speak (this time).
Tips on Speaking:
* If you want to speak, you will probably need to fill out a form and give it to the clerk. (If you don’t want to speak, then don’t! Just being present is important. Not everyone needs to speak.)
*When it’s your turn, you could start with “Good afternoon Committee Chair and Members”; give your name and mention which neighborhood (or city council district) you live in.
* Plan ahead and keep your comments short. You might only have 1-2 minutes. Know what you want to say and then stop when you have said it.
