Last month SDLRLA started a new tradition of monthly membership mixers called Amistad. In reality this is not really a new tradition, but rather the renewal of the monthly membership meetings attended by the founders of our organization. At that time, in the late ’70s and early ’80s, our members would meet at a local restaurant for food, drinks, good company, and to share war stories and cultivate mentoring relationships. Our first Amistad, held with our friends from the Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association, was extremely well attended and a great time. Thank you Amistad co-chairs Renee Galente and Andres Hernandez, and all who attended!
Please join us to build upon our inaugural success as we hold our second Amistad on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Barra Barra Saloon in the Old Town Historic State Park. We are extremely excited about this Amistad because it is part of our outreach efforts as a community partner of the San Diego Opera, as it coordinates the West Coast premiere of the first mariachi opera – Cruzar La Cara de la Luna, on Saturday March 16, 2013. We couldn’t be happier to be a part of this historic cultural event by hosting an Amistad in its honor. Below is the invite – please feel free to pass it along. The event and parking are free, and one lucky attendee will go home with two tickets for the opera’s March 16th, 7 p.m. show!
Also, and sure to delight, we will enjoy a performance by the high school student mariachi group Los Pasacalles. In appreciation of their performance, SDLRLA will send the group and their director to see the opera! Our gratitude to SDLRLA board member Francisco Aldana for sponsoring this wonderful opportunity for these young musicians. And a special thanks to Catherine Arambula and Northwestern Mutual, for their sponsorship of this event. I hope to see you there.
Best, Rafael Castellanos, 2012-2013 SDLRLA President
