SDLRLA is proud to support Big Brothers Big Sisters.
For 50+ years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has provided life-changing one-to-one mentoring to 20,000+ children in San Diego County. Youth in Big Brothers Big Sisters’ programs stay in school, off of drugs, and out of gangs. Mentoring helps youth cope with socio-emotional and self-esteem issues; and provides them skills and knowledge to make smart life choices.
Did you know Big Brothers Big Sisters has a Hispanic Mentoring Initiative? Latino children are paired with caring Big Brothers/Sisters who enrich their lives culturally, socially and academically, and assist them in reaching their potential through professionally supported mentoring friendships.
“How Latinos mature, what schools they go to and how they do in the labor market will have implications for us all in this century,” said Mark Lopez, Associate Director of the Pew Hispanic Center. “A quarter of all children are Hispanic, and in the future they will make up a greater share of the nation’s workforce.” Big Brothers Big Sisters is committed to serving the needs of Hispanic children and help them achieve success in life.
Locally, 52% of the over 800 children on the waiting list for a Big Brother/Sister consists of Latino children, who reside all over the county. The greatest recruitment need is to find Latino male and Spanish-speaking volunteers to be matched with the “Littles” who are waiting to meet their special “Bigs.”
If you wish to change a young life for the better, and you are able to make a year commitment, please consider becoming a Big. What if every child had the opportunity to fulfill his/her potential? You can start a Latino child on the path to BIG things! If you cannot be a Big, please consider a donation to invest in local youth, or help us find volunteer Bigs.
