In response to anti-immigrant rhetoric that demonizes and dehumanizes children fleeing violence, ADL issued this call for civility in the debate.
ADL joined in a Jewish community statement that emphasizes the need to ensure that the U.S. approach is consistent with our country’s commitment to provide safe haven and due process to children fleeing violence who may qualify for asylum.
ADL has been concerned that many of the protests around the country have turned ugly. In Murrieta, CA, for example, more than 100 protestors blocked children from entering the town’s border processing center. Over the weekend of July 19-20, anti-immigrant activists staged approximately 300 protests around the country. Last Saturday, hundreds of protesters attended an anti-immigrant rally in Boston and similar events are planned for August 2 and late October nationwide. Elected officials and public figures have begun using demonizing and dehumanizing rhetoric first coined by the anti-immigrant movement.
