The 21236919_641330379299199_3848840584920358839_n014 SDLRLA Scholarship Fund Dinner was held on Saturday, September 27 at the Hard Rock Hotel, Downtown.  The reception in the Abby Road hallway was, as always, a blast filled with the “Who’s Who” of the legal community in San Diego. We are always so appreciative of the support from the Bench and the Bar.

The Dinner was kicked off by Scholarship Fund Gala Dinner Co-Chairs Adriana Ochoa and Jake Romero, who welcomed the over 350 attendees and graciously thanked the sponsors for their support. A full list of the 2014 sponsors can be found here.

Following the lighthearted banter of Adriana & Jake, SDLRLA 2014 President Renee Galente thanked the hard-working Board and Committee Chairs for their dedication and passion and presented Outgoing Board Member Alara Chilton with the President’s Award for her leadership of the Project LEAD and Neighborhood Law School programs. View the 2014 Gala Dinner program here, which includes a detailed history of SDLRLA.

The 2015 Board of Directors was then sworn in by Judge Yvonne E. Campos.

Honoring our 35th Anniversary, SDLRLA presented long-time supporter and Past President Lilia Garica with the Service to SDLRLA Award. Ms. Garcia has been, and remains, a guiding light for the organization.

The Keynote for the evening, actor and activist Edward James Olmos then commanded the stage. Mr. Olmos spoke passionately about the need to not let people put Latinos in boxes or gain our support based solely on our background or ethnicity, but urged the audience to maintain their independence, their free thought and to question instead of blindly accept. His speech ended to a standing ovation from the audience.

After Mr. Olmos, the Scholarship Fund moved to heart of the evening, awarding 16 law students with $30,000 in scholarships! In addition to the Bar Stipends given earlier in the year, the Scholarship Fund was pleased to award $35,000 in total on the anniversary of the 35th year of the organization. The Scholarship Selection Committee was chaired this year by Candi Mayes and Jose Castillo.

Mr. Aguilar is a Past President, and past Endorsement Committee chair for the organization and was recognized for his work on complex litigation, including securities class actions.

The evening closed out with some words from incoming President Rodrigo Guevara.

This event would not have been possible without the hard work the Dinner Committee. Thank you, especially, to Co-Chairs Adriana Ochoa and Jake Romero, SF President Nadia Bermudez and the dedication of the entire SF Board of Directors! If you would like to make an end-of-year donation with a credit card, click here or download this form for checks.
